RAP Bursary Payments:
•Bachelor Students (eligible in their final year of study only) receive $4,500 (1 year).
•Masters Students receive $17,500 per year (1- 3 years).
•Doctorate Students receive $21,000 per year (1-3 years with the possible extension for an additional year).

Students working in Geological Survey of Canada labs and offices will be responsible for their own living expenses and accommodation.

Duties

Field work anywhere in Canada; Lab work and office work at Geological Survey of Canada offices in Dartmouth (NS), Quebec, Ottawa (ON), Calgary (AB), Vancouver, or Sidney (BC), and areas of the Yukon, British Columbia, North West Territories, and Nunavut for fieldwork, depending on the location of the Geological Survey of Canada supervisor.

Field-based: Much of the field work will be led by research scientists of the Geological Survey of Canada, commonly in partnership with territorial and/or provincial partners. Field seasons generally last 2 to 2.5 months, depending on weather conditions and climate. Accommodation is generally under canvas with rudimentary conveniences, hence a strong desire to experience and enjoy the outdoors is essential. The work itself commonly involves foot traverses, hence a high degree of physical fitness is required. Commonly helicopters and fixed wing aircraft are part of the daily routine. In some cases work may be ship-borne.

Other field work may be undertaken in areas where more infrastructure is available, mostly in southern Canada. Work conditions will be variable depending on local circumstances.

In general, undergraduate assistants assist the research team. Senior undergraduates may undertake work towards a BSc thesis. Graduate assistants are generally responsible for a specific body of research related to the outcomes of the program offering the assignment. Assistants with substantial GIS training will be required to maintain the field databases in some field camps.

Lab and Office based: Lab and office based assignments are variable. They could include geochronology, isotope, geochemistry, geophysics, remote predictive mapping, GIS and other support work.

In particular, projects will be seeking GIS support of all kinds at various levels of proficiency. This may include cartography, image analysis and interpretation, database construction, and data management and interpretation.

•Successful completion of courses in sedimentology such as clastic, carbonate or fluvial.
•Successful completion of courses in hydrogeology.
•Successful completion of courses in hydrocarbon systems.
•Successful completion of courses in geochemistry or geophysics.

Degree equivalency

In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.

•Experience using fieldwork mapping software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, GIS or MapInfo.
•Experience in air photo interpretation, satellite imagery analysis or satellite image processes or using software such as PCI Geomatica or ENVI.
•Experience using MatLab.
•Experience programming with Python.
•Experience using graphics software such as Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator.
•Experience using MS Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel).
•Experience using other IT programs as applicable to the position being staffed.
•Experience working in a lab.
•Experience working in an office.
•Experience working in the field.
•Experience performing research.
•Experience working in isolated communities.
•Experience performing rigorous fieldwork.

Speak or understand an Indigenous language.
